About spot-priced electricity

What does spot-priced electricity mean?

On a spot-price contract, the price of electricity follows the Nordic power exchange's day-ahead market. The price changes from one period to the next, so your bill depends on when you use electricity. The full contract price also adds the supplier's margin and monthly fee, the transfer fee and electricity tax.

How is the price formed?

Prices are set once a day on the day-ahead market: producers and buyers submit their bids, and the price settles where supply meets demand. Since October 2025 the Nordic day-ahead market has used 15-minute periods instead of whole hours.

When are tomorrow's prices published?

Prices for the next day are published in the afternoon, usually around 14.15 Finnish time. Publication can be delayed in exceptional situations.

Do the prices include VAT?

Yes. Every price on this site includes VAT at 25.5%. Note that the exchange price does not include the supplier's margin, the transfer fee or electricity tax.

Can the price be negative?

Yes. When wind generation is plentiful and demand is low, the price can fall below zero. On a contract that follows the exchange, using electricity during such a period can actually pay.

What time of day is electricity cheap?

Spot-priced electricity is usually cheapest when demand is low, meaning at night and at weekends. The most expensive periods typically fall in the morning and early evening peaks. The cheapest hours section shows the unbroken cheapest stretches for today and tomorrow, so you do not have to find them in the table.

What does 15-minute pricing mean?

Since 1 October 2025 the Nordic day-ahead market has priced electricity in 15-minute periods rather than whole hours, so a day now has 96 prices instead of 24. This site shows both: hourly averages by default, and every 15-minute period when you turn on the 15-minute switch.

What does spot price mean?

Spot price and exchange price mean the same thing: the market price formed on the power exchange. It is also called spot electricity, and an hourly or quarter-hourly price depending on the length of the period. The price is usually quoted in cents per kilowatt-hour, written c/kWh or snt/kWh - the same unit.

What does electricity cost right now?

The figure at the top of the page is the price of the period currently running, including VAT. It updates as each period changes, and the chart shows how the whole day develops. Tomorrow's prices appear as soon as they are published, usually around 14.15.

Is a spot-price contract worth it?

Spot pricing is typically cheapest for people who can shift consumption into cheaper periods - timing a water heater, underfloor heating or electric car charging makes a large difference. If your consumption cannot flex at all, a fixed price may be the calmer option. The price risk is yours: on a spot contract the price can rise very high for short stretches.
